Filled Her Heart

mum said she was proud of me
it was a word she used a lot
in those awful landslide last few weeks
it is the word,
that now reduces me to tears
her pride in me, was sometime hidden
sometimes stifled by a bark
but in the final weeks
two of us filled her heart
mum said she was proud of me
over the years i had learned
to accept her as a human being
that maybe, although,
i sometimes wanted more
i accepted her as a human being
and that is how our relationship became
not perfection,
but understanding and accepting
i never asked too much of mum
i knew she could only be a certain way
it offers me much comfort
that those years,
and then sadly, those final days
were spent that way
