Something Bad Came to Stay

when we were looking the other way
bad things came to stay
evil and peerless power
started to prey
when we were focused on self
and concerns of our own
bad things moved in
and made fear their home
we knew,
but did not take note
we understood
the fear and lies
but in the middle of an invasion
we were always preoccupied
and now,
something awful has come to stay
when we thought,
we knew what we needed
when we looked at our history
we thought everything was well heeded
but truth had packed its bag
and moved away
fear undressed and seduced us
and something bad came to stay
