If You Were Still Here

i tried to think today
what would life be like
if you were still here
there would be no tears
and the patterns in life
would be different, almost clear
i tried to imagine you
as i sat on your steps
lost in your final breathing
i tried to imagine your smile
and for a while,
you were there
just walking through the door
and i wished myself
to see your ghost
i tried to think today
the impossible thoughts
and all those times
when grief has embraced them
i miss you…
and i wonder what you would say
if we had experienced
such different and less sad days
