Bittersweet Curse
it is life’s bittersweet curse
that somehow, you spend your life
asking people to add an extra verse
saying,
well, give me a chance…
and finding yourself in some awful dance
where the song of approval
drowns out every chance
who are these people,
for whom we toil
just so they give us slops
from our plywood bowl
i have to wonder,
what kind of wicked device or scheme
means that a life is spent
seeking approval from other human beings
saying,
please, as i stand here
and bask in your magnificent aural shower
let me set my dignity free
as you abuse your power
what a bittersweet curse
how deeply perverse
that you spend your life
in some kind of vicious cycle
with chains wrapped around our heads
i do not wish to beg for approval
with words uncomfortably said
or watch from well worn knees
