If Only They Had Supported You
what would have happened –
had your father not left you
what would have happened –
had your mother held on –
to your tiny childlike frame
if only they had supported you
and not made you carry the blame
what would have happened –
if they had kept to,
sugar and spice and all things nice
instead of anger and spite
what if they had taught you –
that you could be someone to like
and what if –
they had told you the truth
but now, now i have talked
i have begun my own journey
and these questions begin to fill me
and i wonder,
what would have happened-
could you have handled self responsibility
and to stand on your own two feet
what would have happened –
if they had lessened your guilt
and increased the self belief
instead of instilling a feeling that you miss
if only, as a little girl –
they’d told you that you were a princess
