The North – Written Tuesday 14th March 2023 (Aged 48)

The North

here,
here it is colder
and the air,
the air hits me hard
and the swift tang of the wind
finds all my parts
here,
here there is a rugged landscape
smashed apart,
and pushed together
by rampant ice ages
and geological revolutions
here,
here we recline in culture and history
turning the pages
of a mill workers diary
as the sun sets on industrial canals
with narrowboats,
that we see chugging along
connecting great industrial places
here,
here they speak different to me
perched as they are on vowels
with a softness and a lilt
that catches all of my imagination
and causes my head to tilt
