Cake – Written Thursday 18th August 2005 (Aged 30)

Cake

i split the cake into equal parts
who gets what
and who gets my heart
there is not a piece left
yet those who do have a piece
don’t seem to give me any respect
the knife is perfectly poised
there to split the cake
to stand on ceremony
i know it cannot wait
i split the cake as best as i can
who has the soul?
who has my hands?
who gets what
and who wants the whole lot?
the cake is split into its many parts
some taste like treacle pudding
some just a jam tart
i split the cake into equal parts
but never finding any peace
and i know i somehow always reap
just trying to divide the cake
but you know they all get a different piece
