Such a Tempting God
you pick me up, turn me around,
put me down,
and find that you are not sure
of who i actually am.
something gets caught
in the lines of your hands.
turn over those palms
and remember
your self-affirming psalms,
the ones
you memorised at school.
you pick me up and polish my ego
just for a while,
then for a time you see me smile,
but i become awkward
and then hard to hold.
i wonder if
i am the cautionary tale,
the one that you were once told.
is power such a tempting god
do i not fit in with your plans?
you turn me around,
then you put me back down.
i am the opinion settler
with the unruly sound.
