I Thought I Was Clever
i thought i was clever,
but maybe,
maybe someone disagreed.
i started climbing the mountain,
but found myself all at sea.
i thought i had some positive power,
but then,
my big ideas were forced to duck down and cower.
but it was not arrogance,
or horseback-given deliverance,
and it was not a belief in a self-propelled genius,
or some such nonsense.
i just thought, well, maybe
after all, i am clever…
but now i know that the belt was plastic,
and hope actually needed the softness of leather.
i had gotten used to dreams,
purchased on the never-never.
i thought, finally,
after all these years,
my jagged bits would come together,
so much…
with sky rockets coming back to earth,
feet straight down, and touching the turf.
i thought i was clever,
but maybe,
maybe someone disagreed.
don’t worry,
i will grab my ego on the way out,
just please excuse me, i need to leave.
