Dig Deep
they call it, ‘digging deep’,
dig deep, they say –
and believe me,
i have dug deep,
so deep,
past the mud and the clay.
i have dug deep,
into the words i would like to say.
and after digging so deep,
there is nothing,
but a hefty toll.
dig deep, they say,
but i can’t keep digging this hole.
i am deep down,
past the top layer
and the coal,
the fossils and the past.
my hope as a ship,
is perfectly cast.
dig deep, they say,
but this shovel can’t last.
how can there be something in me
on which i can call?
i do as they say and i dig deep,
even when the words feel cruel.
