This Is What I Am
Some say this is what I have become.
Maybe that is true.
Perhaps it makes sense
that we should become the sum of our experience.
This is what I am.
There is no belief in fate.
We made it up as we went along —
decision-making, not our forte.
Just pot luck.
People who lived in moments.
People who lived in flux.
This is what I am.
Now these years have melded together,
or fallen into life’s stew.
This is what you are,
as we search for fuel.
This is what I am.
Fifty years of tension
and creative suspense —
those towers of life still feel immense.
This is what we all are.
Time —
it’s not really given to us,
but in fact,
only really lent.
