Jam
He promises free jam,
but the jam never arrives.
Just as it didn’t after Brexit,
when he also promised free jam.
But he can say what he likes.
People believe; they think he’s right,
convinced that they understand.
But tomorrow comes,
and there is no free jam.
So he says it again — if that, if this —
that it will be free jam for all.
But there never is, and he’s just a fool.
And he doesn’t have the ear of the working-class voter;
he couldn’t care at all.
He does not understand the problems,
yet he wins them over —
and he wins them over
with the simple offer of free jam.
And no matter what happens,
people fail to learn.
And people fail to learn
or even begin to understand,
because they are always lured
by the idea of blaming someone else
and a pot of free jam.
