Knockout Blow
The world shudders
and some pull in their coat.
Democracy’s a shadow boxer.
The knockout blow
is the individual vote.
The bombs go off;
we expect worse.
An opinion shifts
on shallow turf.
And the world loses its sheen
as lies are spoken.
What was once so golden
now feels so broken.
And some — some people —
pull in their coat,
only to look back at the world
and see it’s sins.
Because we are not all
in the same boat,
no matter what people say.
And that’s what concerns me
when it comes to individual votes.
