i should have played my cards
instead i played my heart
higher or lower?
i was happy to just take part
even when i gained a past
from the back of an apple cart
i should have completed the set
but the queue and then the crowds
always made me feel the best
higher or lower?
who knows what all this means
i was happy to fill the pipe,
and inhale exhaustive dreams
i could have settled down
ran a delicate business,
from the right side of town
joined a band for the tone death
and reveled in its unique sound
higher or lower?
happily i was always easily found
even when wrestling with depression
even when i got really down
i always played my heart
even when i felt chained and bound
