We Played Our Own Instruments – Tuesday 3rd September 2019

We Played Our Own Instruments

when we were young
we played our own instruments
no tune,
no idea of song
but the melody –
was always strong
when the days came
and took us by surprise
we were young
with those hungry eyes
each day,
the page,
was new
not yellowed with age
and we jumped through hoops
we played our own instruments
we plotted our own coup
we were so funny
in our ways
as we made our way
through the days
we were on trend,
and the maze was such a craze
and we loved as friends
but it all came to an end
we took out our loans and mortgages
on adulthood
and that is where we live
remember when the melody was strong
even when we could not find the pitch
