when you first meet people
you are just a someone
you are just, them, him or her
then they use your name
and it shows that they know you are there

James Garratt – Thursday 2nd November 1995
This poem was written at Canalot Studios in London. I was working there at the Home Video Channel. The Home Video Channel was the company name, i actually worked for the Adult Channel – an ‘adult’ digital satellite ‘soft porn’ late night channel. It’s not as exciting as it sounds, aside from some naughty programme intros and some rather dubious wet t shirt competitions in the worst clubs in the north of England I was employed as a runner and number two on transmission which was through the night.
I was thrust into this mad new world and and it was so strange. I wrote the piece literally when someone had asked me to do something and it chimed with me because it was the first time i had felt like part of it. I think had started a week or so previously (see picture below) and i seem to remember i was doing days to learn as much as possible as my usual shift pattern was nights.
If you click on the link below, although the Adult Channel has long gone, it occupied the rooms to the left of the entrance. This is a rare poem from the time because i do clearly remember writing it.
