Taking Back My Hands

i saw them –
a sunset across the sea
coming home from fishing
coming home to me
if you cannot love me
or care for me
or respect me for who i am
forget it –
i will take back my hands
i will not be what people tell me
i will not play their games
i saw them –
and they knew my name
a sunset across the sea
and she said,
you have turned a corner
and i knew it was true
i had rediscovered my dignity
after watching it fall through
if you cannot love me
or try to care for me
or respect me for who i am
forget it –
i will make other plans
and i will take back these caring hands
