Trees and Pavements and Cars
trees and pavements and cars
suburban towns bathed in lampost light
and a well tidied driveway
a garage masquerading as another room
but,
the rag and bone man left some years ago
the loads no longer echo to his whistled tune
i sat down by the chestnut tree
and tried to turn over a new leaf
but all i did was roll out of bed
and end up amongst the crumpled sheets
trees and pavements and cars
suburban wives bathed in a disconnected light
you remember that when you see the curtains move
it is not to let in more light
the rag and bone man used to ring his bell
but now, all these place, no longer look so bright
and the residents cry out for a different hell
