The Joke Has Gone Flat
the world’s joke has gone flat
freedom is suppressed
how do we laugh?
from the crooked podium
to the streets of iraq
say it is not true,
that my television and my newspapers
are a distorted view
one without a grain of truth
i know the sea’s are still –
many shades of green and blue
but in the streets
there are the innocent dead
there are no greens and blues
just streaks of sad, sad reds
i am so angry
and i have turned myself over
just to avoid
tears on my cheeks
and i know the people around me feel the same
the world’s joke has gone flat
and we find ourselves buried deep in pain
