Someone Should Have Told You
you are scared of him –
and you cry because of him
you are convinced –
that he is a monster
you try to understand him
and that makes you hate yourself more
you think you are like him
and yet,
no one had the decency it seems –
to tell you –
that you are not him
his name within your family group
a derogatory term
and poor you,
branded just through association
someone should have told you
and treated you like a princess
told you that you are not him
but it seems you have lived in that shadow
and you were fed a diet of his guilt
you walked with nightmares
and shivered under your quilt
you think you but you do not know
you couldn’t know and you never can
but then you shouldn’t have to –
because it is impossible to understand
