As a Friend I Was Too Much – Written July 2023 (Aged 48)

As a Friend I Was Too Much

increasingly i am out of touch,
back to southend once more
but the sea is rough
and i think –
as a friend i was too much
those penny arcades full of girls
testing my luck
and no amount of nostalgia
can lick clean –
my complicit past
that is why –
paper planes never fly that fast
and my family plans,
have a list of unfinished tasks
so, southend once more
but all the cafes and bars
have moved out –
probably when i went too far
the place will be a shell –
of what i once was
the town, now city of my life –
will be forever lost
but the pavements will be familiar
for someone –
who increasingly out of touch
i know, as friend –
i know i was always too much
