What Is Soul Searching Anyway?

what is, ‘soul’
a word we drop into our conversations
like,
a bird of paradise set free
i know i used it as a boy
but now it has little or no familiarity
but the word used to rise up
and be my cavalry
or my ultimate line of defence
like,
something that is truly well meant
and yet still,
people talk of soul searching
as if they are hunting down a phantom
one that is ever present
and lurks in the dark corners of their lives
there,
in the dark recesses of their being
in the unlit corridors –
of their shame and guilt
in the impossible caverns –
of their life trauma
but what is, ‘soul’,
a word that happily wears casual slacks
but in actual fact,
should be wearing a dinner jacket on its back
of course there is no truth in this,
we are all in fact, ‘soul searching’, in some way
