Were You There

were you there when i first found love?
were you there?
were you there to understand how it made me feel
were you there?
were you there when i first heard marc bolan
were you there?
were you there to understand how it made feel
it was something deep and personal
something so tangible
were you there?
were you there when i dropped my shame
when i left home,
and refused to keep on playing the game
were you there for the times when i felt alone
or just felt insane
were you there?
were you there when i first met her
were you there when life was an open field
when i had too much shame
and a harvest to yield
were you there –
to understand how these things made me feel
and, yet, still you claim,
that only you know me and what is real
but you are dancing with something so insane
and you have no idea how i really feel
