Familiar Accent
familiar accents and voices –
fill up my ears
ducking down,
as the vowels fly near
as pronunciation says,
‘hold my beer’,
as estuary english
acts out king lear
it’s then,
that i pull something deeply near
it is not a soft sound
it feels like –
it could easily cut glass
but like tall ships on the thames
it’s homecoming has come to pass
familiar accents and voices –
fill up my ears
and i am suddenly taken back
to the generations of my past
the people i grew up with,
the migrated working class
not the modern affected sound
that televised reality,
easily handed down
i hear the vowels
and i hear their piercing sounds
as memories,
that were lost are suddenly found
as estuary english
claps it hands
and i am brought back around
