Autumn – Written September 2023 (Aged 48)

Autumn

cats sit outside as autumn sun floods in
we cling on,
knowing winter is about to set in
the rainy summer
leaves a desolate memory
and a craving for warmth
but we know the colder days,
are approaching without a pause
we think about the fire,
and how it’s warmth will be sought
cats are still outside, well, just the one
his fur caught,
in the small flurries of a september breeze
i watch as it blows across his face,
ruffling his stern whiskers
he is taught and he is ready,
for any prey or monster that comes his way
he does not seem to mind –
that the temperature has dropped
and that the air has a different touch
i am sure his thick fur coat –
makes him feel that he is in luck
we cling on,
the steady demise of summer is upon us
and autumn will soon hold court
the colder months are here,
and we have to embrace these colder days
and not succumb to a winter fear
