Candy Glitter
Was I in a dream —
another being,
another time, another place,
different objectives for me to lace.
A subjective face,
one that is peering at me
from a decade
almost bathed in glitter,
but in the end
found itself climbing out of the gutter.
Who was I?
I do not know what to say.
The champion could never pay,
and the greyhound races —
they went the same way.
The object of perfection
became an object of great weight,
then an object of dereliction,
and it sunk into my face.
Was I in a dream —
another being,
me, the so-called all-seeing,
lost in those London bunkers
that I carved out of a career,
one that clearly never happened.
Me — never the big hitter,
and that decade,
one almost bathed in candy glitter,
but in the end
found itself climbing out of a gutter.
