I Never Expected Such Times
i thought gathering years
would gather me up
pull up the covers tight
and then turn off the light
i thought a feeling of safety
about the world
would approach –
with the vanishing cold
i thought my later years
would see horror stories all told
but here i am,
and the fragility of the world
the cracks are on show
the rise of populism,
like we could never know
i see humanity
and the sparkle in its eyes
i do see care
and i do know it has not died
but all this anger and hate
the blame and the ignorance
it has become a familiar trait
and i never expected these days
i never expected such times
