My Victorian Buildings
My Victorian buildings
were built to last,
but my play was cast,
and I was sent out to sea.
And the nature of towns
is that they never live up
to what we want them to be,
so you decline and dine
within your memory.
My Victorian buildings
were built to last.
As I learned to swim
and become entangled
in my own past,
my innocence
a rarely featured dance,
my monopolies
haunted only by chance.
So I slow down,
I slow right down,
and the new, the now,
the present,
it pulls up,
and I realise
all that is new
is now done,
and there is only
my Victorian buildings.
