I Fear We Have Lost Each Other

i think about walking to you
and to join with your hands
but i cannot erase that phase
all those, ‘lost days’
but it does break me,
because you were there at my beginning
and even when you went away
to read newspapers
eventually coming back
negotiating ‘bumps’ in the road
sleeping together in our clothes
i think about how close we were
and how close we came…
it breaks me to know i cannot find a way
to cross the river
to step in… but it leaves me
not knowing how i can ever deliver
as the friendship of us clings to my back
deploying its unshakable shiver
