I Planned for Conformity – Tuesday 20th August 2019

I Planned for Conformity

when i was younger
i planned for conformity
not a life,
settle down, a place to live
a job and a wife…

i did not plan
for the twists and turns of life
i planned for expectation
and societal norms
not a life, as of then, unplanned
i must have thought
conformity would help me understand
that, it alone,
would offer me guiding hands

when i was younger
i feared the unknown
and felt achieving acceptability
would show how i had grown
i did not accept the normality
of unknown paths

i thought societal norms
were the way forwards
i hoped for a life with less choice
no more doors,
conformity though, gave me no voice
it smothered identity and gave life to being bored
i should have accepted the twists and turns of life
accepted uncertainty and change
