I Wish The Words Had Left My Mouth

i wanted to say
i am here for you
but those words
have never flowed –
between us
but i am
it felt like i was –
the caregiver
and when i thought –
about growing up
it was you that –
was strong
and it was me –
that sought protection
seeing you,
upset, and with –
a look of sadness
felt like,
the natural order of life,
had just changed
the rooms of our relationship
hastily rearranged
i wanted to say
i am here for you
it is not true
that this life and in this life
that is what it is all about
i meant, i just wish –
the words had left my mouth
