We Can Only Be Ourselves

i can only be who i am
that is all –
any of us can be
i will live and die by that
i cannot alter building blocks
or facts
i am not resistive to change
but i am at an age
where there is only so much i can do
i do not have the energy
or the mental wealth
so seek approval
or worry about my stealth
it is hard
because skin was thinned
by a childhood, battered with bricks
and, if nothing else, all these years
have been hoping it would become thick
i can only be who i am
that is all any of us,
can ever do
i could beat myself up –
hang myself out to dry
expend all my well being –
begging, please, i will try, i will try
i can only be myself
by that i will no doubt live and no doubt die
