Took My Thought (The Weary Six O’clock) – Wednesday 20th November 1996

Took My Thought (The Weary Six O’Clock)

took my thought
saved for you
ruled my kingdom for a day
stole a princess in a wedding dress
and pretended she had nothing to say
took my thought
and rode across the city
on silver metal machines
devoid of horses
metropolis dark and brooding
you came and sought me
but i was leaving
on a weary six o’clock
took my thought
and expanded it
beyond original conception
lived out happiness and rejection
took my thought
like a precious present
and soon i was bought

James Garratt – Wednesday 20th November 1996

This was written when i was commuting from London back to Essex. I was working at Waterloo for Shell Petrol and this involved getting trains to London. I kind of turned all that into this, the silver tube trains on the northern line, the ‘weary six o’clock’ was the six o’clock train i got out of Fenchurch Street Station at the end of my day. I was trying to stretch myself a bit here and react to working in London and meeting new people and having new experiences.
