You Fetched Me at Eighteen
i am sad that you have left my life
but i know this has been on our cards –
for some time
you fetched me at eighteen
you were one of those who helped me
set for undiscovered but promised lands
then you found me once again
as i was busy laying rails
and i was writing in newspapers
we shared a bed
but never what often arrives later
i am sad that you have left my life
sadness finds me on a step –
it holds me tight
as my memories try not to forget
and my values offer to strike up a light
you were there
in my clumsy years
punch drunk with a mix tape
and a semi circle of fears
this has been on our cards –
for sometime
each card is quickly dealt
your slow but apparent exit
is all far too keenly felt
i am sad that you have left my life
