I Loved Someone Once

i open the door
but
i cannot keep it open
i loved someone once
and…
i kept the door open
fearing to shut it
clinging to the cracks of light
which tantalisingly peeped through
peering in…
i loved someone once
and…
i kept giving back
and saying, well, just once more
in the end,
i had to close the door
so i realise that now –
that door will not be open for evermore
afterall,
how could i ever live in such hope and hurt
i opened the door
but
i cannot leave it open
just hoping that on the off chance
that person will finally come through
i have to protect myself
no matter what i feel for you
i loved someone once….
