Paper Cuts (Originally Untitled) – Written December 2016 (Aged 41)

Paper Cuts

can you not just enjoy –
your heritage and culture
without assuming –
it makes you better –
than everybody else
and they say,
”i am not a racist, but…”
why is it that nationalism
only comes with paper cuts
i am british they say
but what does that say –
about me and my life chances
nationalism and patriotism
is falsely convinced by colour
and leaves the door firmly shut
why is it that nationalism
only comes with paper cuts

James Garratt – December 2016
