Dare I Sit Back and Enjoy?
i sit in the garden office
and the sun streams in
it lights me up in a kind of hope
and i turn back to my work
clutching a cup of tea
i know, the person i love made me
and i think,
i guess… no, i know –
it was worth it in the end
all those years
of drink, emotional fights –
heartache and, ‘girls’, in black tights
all those years,
of scraping the minimum wage
and less –
before those sour blairite days
i sit here here
and i hear voices travel up
from the café just along
there is no melody
but their conversation is a hopeful song
i know life –
will find a way to have me down again
because the pain is never finished
but for now, just for today
all that can wait
