Stepping Into The World
seventeen year old me
looks –
a, ‘right old mess’,
should have combed his hair
helped him dress
but,
i was in a church of one –
with gravy on my sunday best
i was in a team of one –
with rusty medals pinned to my chest
seventeen year old me
looks –
a, ‘right old mess’,
with mental deficits and trauma
corruption leaking in
and my tv dinners in the bin
but,
i was coronated in a leap year
with grisly days
and gnawing fear
i was captain of a ship
that i could not steer
large gaps in my emotional development
ardent and clear
i stepped into the world
with lacklustre cheer
and idle beer

Stepping Into The World – Written May 2023 (aged 48)

“i was coronated in a leap year
with grisly days
and gnawing fear
i was captain of a ship
that i could not steer”
Just WOW.
It is strange to look back sometimes. You can see so much and know what’s coming… but in the end, it all shaped the “you” that you are now.

Thank you – it’s the idea of offering care and support to a younger version of you – as if they are a separate entity 🙂
