London on Sea
london on sea just cannot work for me
the, ‘good old days’,
just do not pay
and star lit illuminations
have faded to grey
it is not how it used to be
jellied eels and living by the sea
a generation stuck in a groundhog day
somewhere in 1953
it is a shootout –
between progress and staying the same
but this town just fumbles in its pockets
for some unwanted loose change
the council meets and debates the blame
those, ‘southenders’, would see them hang
and happily build the frame
but are they any closer to their victorian homes
they dig in deep and gnaw the bone
too big, too much lost
the golden mile has turned into a quagmire –
for all those seaside smiles
