Rhyme These Words – Undated piece written either 2011 or 2012 (Aged 36)

Rhyme These Words

they are said you are a poet
and if you rhyme these words
you will certainly know it…
so,
with hats and cloaks –
i stumble onto the stage
just to read out a few lines
oh,
these lights they do flood
and with my self esteem
i wonder if i will ever be enough
and should i be doing this
all my life –
it’s been easy to be a shirker
it’s a miracle i am thirty six
and even in fact a social worker
but,
i must push those thoughts to one side
and stand here
looking you straight in the eye
do i appeal to you
tell me, tell me what to say
hey,
i could combine words
stretch verbs and twist the nouns
stand here just looking afraid
or give you my best comic pout
but oh,
this crippling shyness that stalks me
and now, it has me by my throat
give me some creepy magicians
so that i can disappear into smoke
