Are We There Yet? – Written June 2023 (Aged 48)

Are We There Yet?

it took a long time to get here
and i am not sure where ‘here’ exactly is
it feels like better than former years
and some those are not so missed
i wonder,
if i had been me now, back then,
but that is ridiculous
because then i had so much to mend
and this now,
is the culmination of years
it’s a journey of experience,
oiled by tears
with road signs,
often depicting images of fear
it took a long time to get here
but i am not sure where ‘here’ exactly is
dreams were once mean and lean
and rarely missed,
but true personal success was rarely kissed
i wonder,
if i could have reduced my journey time
but then, time runs too quick
and it is always chomping at the bit
inside fires though,
they remain easily lit
but the ripples of poor mental health
lie at the back of my wardrobe
in amongst the discarded belts
it took a long time to get here
and now i watch as previous years melt
