You Are Your Own Person
the first time i kissed someone
i never thought about my father
the first time i got drunk with friends
i never thought about my father
in that respect,
he has never really cast a shadow over me
he has made me scream aloud
he’s made me cry and he’s made me hate
but his problems were never mine
true, i don’t dissect genetic science
but i am sure i am not my father
two and two does not make five
i have never let –
the insipid demon of his personality
stop me from being alive
because the first time i fell in love
i never thought about my father
the times i have had my heart broken
i never thought about my father
true, his problems had an impact upon me
of that there can be no doubt
but i realised when i was very young
that was not what i was all about
i never thought about my father
if i had,
then maybe everything would be different
but i never thought about him like a spectre
