Learn Part 1

i learnt to dislike confrontation
at the age of six
every angry word
ever argument, every hit
i learnt all about insecurity
when i was seven
when she turned up with my bike
when we boarded the train
when we left in the night
and i learnt about jealously
at the age of nine
when i gained the first of many stepfathers
all of whom were mentally blind
then i learnt to stand up for myself
at the age of fourteen
he threw a punch,
but even i,
could avoid a drunk
i learnt to be who i am
at the age of sixteen
when i first heard a special voice
i am a survivor and never a victim
and for me, that is not even a choice
