This Tragic Gift

too many people –
jumped on the bandwagon
now the band will not play
and the wagon will not roll
too many people –
they tried to dig deep
now they’re stuck in a hole
and it feels like it’s for keeps
too many people –
have crossed the bridge
but not offered the toll
more have volunteered for the match
but cannot find the goal
they tell us now that it does not exist
that a child’s deficiencies
are love and interaction missed
too many people
pass on this most tragic of gifts
