The Past – Written June 2007 (Aged 32)

The Past

the past is lit by gas lamps
it has a sepia tinge
tall hats reach for the clouds
and handsome cabs –
are drawn by horses looking proud
the past is an achievement
with mighty iron bridges
it bristles with beards and sideburns
and the moral fabric,
though hypocritical,
somehow remained firm
the past has a face with dirty smudges
it has tall chimneys
bellowing out industrial smoke
it is driven by steams engines
fuelled by dark black coke
the past is an empire
that stretches far and wide
it is the fight for votes
the changing face of class
it is industrial revolutions
that is the past,
and the past lives in grand houses
with strange looking people
it worships at church,
wearing its sunday best
one which darwin never attended
it fought wars,
where riches were defended
