Emotional Cement – Written Friday 27th September 2024 (Aged 49)

Emotional Cement

I am not sure—
I care as much as I should.
And I am not convinced—
just because a person says something,
it must be true.
Just because it frames my worldview,
all because I feel
it confirms something I already knew.

My internal and external world
are hard enough.
And whilst people put in their bids,
I just have to cope with my world
as it constantly shifts.

Too often, we put the most faith
in those who confirm our bias—
truth because another version
of a person’s prejudice.
Self-awareness leaves people tired.
The most correct are, amazingly,
those who meet our checks.

But I do not know
if my energy is not better spent
looking after my people,
those who are well-meant,
people who are there
as part of my foundations—
people like emotional cement.
