The Price of Tricycles
so, the dreams we had –
tumbled down –
an overgrown hill
and the price of tricycles –
reflects the way that we feel
it is a steady increase
on the terms of the lease
and every middle-aged person –
irons their memories to remove a crease
but you have to go on,
likely, at some point,
all this will be gone
like the dreams that we once had
like the sun that once shone –
which peeped at us back in our twenties
and then it was gone
so, the dreams we had –
tumbled down –
an overgrown hill
and the price of tricycles –
is dependent on the number of wheels
that’s how it works,
especially when you are young,
when you have emotions that like to steal
it’s all part of immaturity,
a kind of toxicity that likes to feel
so now we sit here
on reclaimed Orwellian walls
and all the wives who grew up back then
join groups –
so that the past isn’t just pretend
and days ahead are not faced
lying down on such an uncomfortable bed
whilst the men sit down,
and try to reclaim the words they once said
