Check Your Script
People say things here—
things that they do not mean,
things that they feel fit—
but I hear the rustle of paper
as they check their script.
Where is the authenticity?
Where is the real you?
Buzzwords tumble like word salad,
and none of it is true.
No one dares to speak their truths.
No one speaks up or out.
And no one wants to alter the deck
and give agency to those without clout.
People say things here,
but it’s a language
that no one ever needs to learn.
If this is the talent,
then we need someone to do a different turn.
Well-meaning people,
with their kind eyes,
reading from a script
that appears to be full of lies.
There is a power in individuals.
There is a power to what we feel inside.
But there is more power in the pack—
and I am sitting here
as people use a unique form of chat.
People say things here—
things they do not mean,
things that they feel fit—
but I always hear the rustle of paper,
and I know they are checking their script.
