Swirls
I don’t want to be caught up
in the swirls of opinion,
lost in praise
and its hollow sound.
I do not want to be heaven-sent
only to crash back down to the ground.
I do not want to be a newfound trend,
only to get hurt
and find myself looking for ways to mend.
I don’t want to be the bright new thing,
only to see the lights go dim
as the choirs sing mournful hymns.
I’m not that grand
or even that bespoke.
I’m not there with answers in hand,
and I do not want to cause people
to lose all hope.
So do not place me on a pedestal,
or high upon pedestals.
This person, this boy, is far too old,
and this person does not want
to be taken for a fool.
I do not want to be caught up
in the swirls of opinion.
