Don’t Do Politics
people say, ‘i don’t do politics’
as they wait for their bins to be collected
as they wonder why the library has closed
as ring up,
and wonder why they have to wait so long
for a hospital appointment
as they wonder –
why a relative cannot get support
they still, don’t do politics
as the world around them
becomes altered by decisions
people lose themselves
in the distractions of the powerful
and the influences created by us
there are so many
and if doubt, there is always fear
people say, i don’t do politics
but when, politics is done
and something else is lost
something else becomes a ghost
people wonder why,
and watch as more little shops close
as they watch their energy bills rise
as they pay much more for their train fare
as more expensive houses are built
as the world changes
i don’t do politics, hardly soaks up the guilt
